Netflix is coming to Portugal in October 2015!

After over 3 months of speculation on rumors of closed room talks with Hollywood studios for Portuguese movie and tv show rights, Netflix has announced that Portugal will be added to its list of European countries that can legally watch Netflix.  The projected release date is October, 2015.  The service will provide online streaming of a wide selection of movies and television series' in high-definition or even Ultra HD 4k.  With over 75% of internet connections in Portugal having download speeds of over 4 Mbps (the minimum recommended for high definition video viewing), it appears that Portugal is positioned well for wide-spread acceptance of Netflix as a viable movie-watching system.  However, Ultra HD typically requires speeds over 15 Mbps, which less than 10% of households have access to.

As usual with previous regional releases, Netflix has not provided a complete TV Show or Movie catalogue listing to showcase what they will be offering, although they have stated that they will be providing a slate of Netflix Originals including:
  • Sense8
  • Grace and Frankie
  • Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
  • Marvel's Daredevil
  • Marco Polo
They also promise critically acclaimed documentaries, stand-up comedy specials, and a wide variety of family and kids programming, with most titles offering subtitles and dubbing in Portuguese.  Exact pricing will be released closer to October, however pricing packages are expected to be consistent with other European countries, with different pricing tiers based on video quality and the number of users that can stream video at the same time.
